A grade change handled properly: a retaining wall to hold the soil, steps to get through it, and a driveway laid to take vehicle weight.
The wall

Retaining walls manage land elevation changes and prevent soil erosion. Design and material selection depend on the exact needs of the property and its surroundings, and proper installation technique is what gives a wall its longevity.

The steps

Natural stone steps break through the wall on the desire line rather than at the corner, so the route people already walked is the route that got paved.

The driveway

Herringbone paver bond was chosen for the driveway because the interlock resists the shifting that a running bond allows under turning vehicles. The base was excavated, filled with crushed stone and compacted before any paver was set.
