Front-yard desertscape and dry riverbed

A low-maintenance, water-efficient landscape that reads as part of the desert rather than as a lawn that gave up.

The ground

Rock selection considers size, color and texture to match the aesthetic and functional goals of the property. A base layer of landscape fabric under the rock prevents weed growth and keeps the long-term maintenance down to almost nothing.

The riverbed

The dry riverbed follows the line water already takes across the yard in a monsoon, so it does a drainage job as well as a visual one. Boulders were set with a skid steer before the smaller material went in around them.

The planting

Drought-tolerant planting and desert-friendly materials conserve water and reduce the need for frequent upkeep, while supporting local wildlife. Paver edging holds the rock back from the drive and the path.
